Dr. Nicole E. Avalon MPAS, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD

Dr. Nicole Avalon is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego studying cyanobacterial natural products in the William Gerwick Lab. She received her PhD with Professor Bill Baker at the Department of Chemistry at the University of South Florida in December 2020.  During her PhD studies, Nicole's research focused cold water marine invertebrates with an emphasis on drug discovery, bacterial biosynthesis, and host-associated microbiomes. Prior to obtaining her PhD, Nicole received her Master's in Physician Assistant Studies and practiced medicine as a physician assistant in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL. There, she was also involved in clinical research focused on ameliorating secondary neuronal injury following cerebral insult. Her interests include natural products chemistry, drug discovery, biosynthetic gene clusters, microbial genomics, proteomics, and neuroscience.
